Ann Arbor's Growth as a University Town
During the mid to late 20th century, Ann Arbor grew significantly as a university town and continued to prosper as the thriving village that had been established almost two hundred years earlier.

Until 1968 the elegant limestone train depot served as the main gateway to the city, conveying to arriving passengers a sense of the importance of their destination. Students began and ended their journeys at the station, and travelers could set out for quick trips to Detroit or Chicago, or longer sojourns to the East and West. The Ann Arbor Railroad also brought important people into town. In 1960, presidential candidates Kennedy and President Nixon rode their campaign trains into Ann Arbor and gave whistle stop speeches to win support for their competing elections.
