Red Brick Schoolhouse

The first brick schoolhouse in Ypsilanti was built in 1829.  Schools in early Ypsilanti were mainly run by private citizens who charged for classes, which they gave from their own home.  An individual ran an advertisement in the newspaper for a "Select School for Young Ladies," for example, listings the subjects or skills taught at the school.
